What is LIV Golf?

What is LIV Golf?

LIV Golf are doing Golf Tournaments differently and attempting to break the monopoly of the PGA tour with smaller fields of golfers, fewer rounds of golf, only three per event, a defined shorter playing season, and shotgun starts, the format has been designed with fans in mind and attempting to break the various worldwide Tours.

What is the Format of LIV Golf?

LIV Golf is trying to revolutionise golf with a new format in the hope to engage with more fans.

So how does it work, well in a season there will be:

• 8 Events
• 12 Teams
• 48 Players
• 54 Holes
• Shotgun Starts
• No Cuts

The 8 Events

In the 2022 season it will be made up of 7 regular events and the 8th event will be the final which will end the season.

In the LIV Golf Invitational Series, it will have 48 professional golfers competing in both the individual events and team format events. Both events will have individuals and teamsswining both points and prize money.

Individual Events

Like a normal format competition on either the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour the LIV series will have players performing in a standard type stroke play event,  the winner of the individual event with be the golfer with the lowest score  over 54 holes (3 Rounds) instead of 72 holes (4 Rounds) like the other golf tours.

The overall winner of the individual event will be the golfer with most points gained after the 7 events.

Team Championship

The team championship will be played on the last event of the series, so the 8th tournament.

How this works is a seeded four-day competition which is played over four rounds of 18 hole golf and the format is an action packed match play knock out.

In the LIV Golf Invitational Series Team Championship there will be 12 teams competing and each team will have four golfers.

Each team will have a captain and the captains job is to select which scores count and act as the on and off course manager.

How much money is in the prize purse?

On the LIV Golf Invitational Series each event has a purse of $25 Million, no wonder so many golfers are moving from the two major golf tours to join the LIV Golf Invitational Series with unbelievable money on offer.

Not only are golfers being paid tens of millions to join the tour but each event has unbelievable money on offer.

How is the prize money broken down?

With each of the 7 events through 2022 having a purse of $25 Million each, the individual winner of each event will be rewarded with $4 Million, then the winnings will be reduced down for each place until the last placed golfer who will still win $120,000.

How much does the overall winner receive?

The golfer that has the most points over the 7 events, will not only be crowned champion of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, but will walk away with a staggering $18 Million with second place securing a cool $8 Million and third $4 Million.

This type of cash reward is staggering and when you think about winning the FEDEX over a whole season and winning $10 Million, just shows you how inviting the LIV series must be to professional golfers.

How much cash can you get winning the Team Event?

The total prize pot for the team event is a staggering $50 Million, where all the teams will win a slice of this.

The first place team will get $16 Million and even the team coming last will receive $1 Million, each of the four golfers in the team will secure 25% of the team winnings.
